Evan Bourne's real name is Matthew Joseph Korklan. He currently wrestles for the WWE, but for most of his career, you could find him on the independent circuit wrestling as Matt Sydal.
Korklan began his wrestling training while still in high school. He started training at Gateway Championship Wrestling (GCW) in St. Louis. After just three months of training, he stepped in the ring.
From his 2000 debut until 2004, Matt Sydal would dazzle the wrestling world. He had a high profile series of matches with AJ Styles (a future TNA World Champion) as well as matches against Superstars like CM Punk (future WWE World Champion), Chris Sabin, and Nate Webb.
Starting in 2004, Sydal starting competing for the #2 American promotion, Total Nonstop Action (TNA). In fact, Sydal was featured on the company's very first full pay-per-view, Victory Road. He participated in the X Division's Gauntlet for the Gold match. Sydal came up short in that match.
During his brief TNA tenure, which lasted until 2005, Sydal was used exclusively as a "jobber". This means he was basically paid to lose to the stars of the show.
After TNA, Sydal soon debuted for the #3 wrestling promotion in America: Ring of Honor (ROH).
In Ring of Honor, Sydal once again faced AJ Styles. He then ended up teaming with Styles to take on his former Generation Next stable mates.
Even though they wrestled each other many times throughout the year, Sydal and Christopher teamed up to win the ROH tag titles. They would eventually lose the titles to the Briscoe Brothers.
Soon afterward, Matt Sydal realized his life-long dream by signing a contract with World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE), the undisputed king of professional wrestling.
Sydal started with Ohio Valley Wrestling (OVW), a development territory run by the WWE. Sydal furthered his training at OVW. He won the OVW Heavyweight Championship in December.
But in February of the next year, WWE announced that it was severing its relationship with OVW. Because of this change, Sydal immediately lost the OVW title to Jay Bradley.
Sydal was moved to the new WWE development territory, Florida Championship Wrestling (FCW) in Tampa, FL. Sydal would only work there for several months before he was called up to the main roster.
Sydal, now knows as Evan Bourne, made his ECW debut on June 3, 2008. He immediately set ECW on fire. The fans were into him. His small stature and explosive move set really captivated the audience.
And in return for this fan reaction, he was rewarded with a decent push. However, injury would plague the young superstar's first real brush with fame. As he was going for a move, Bourne severely injured his ankle. He would be on the sidelines for several months.
Bourne returned in March to ECW and immediately started a feud with Mark Henry and his manger, WWE Hall of Famer, Tony Atlas.
After losing cleanly in the middle of the ring by pin fall, Evan Bourne was drafted to Raw in June.
Since being drafted to Raw, Bourne's push has decreased dramatically. He is now being used as little more than a "jobber" again.
In the WWE though, this doesn't mean the end. Many times wrestlers are broken down, only to be brought up even bigger than before.
Only time will tell for Evan Bourne. The young fans seem to really like his special look and his energy. Could Evan Bourne become a Hall of Famer or is fate destined to be that of a "jobber"? Only time will tell.
